Badrinath Temple: A Sacred Journey to the Divine

Badarinath is one of the holy shrines for Vaishnavites among the 108 divya desams incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Badrinath town is also the part of Panch Badri temples including Yog Dhyan Badri, Bhavishya Badri, Adi Badri and Vriddha Badri, along with Badrinath temple. At the Badarinath Mandir Gate, directly opposite the main Idol of Lord himself, is seated idol of Bird Garud, vehicle / carrier of Lord Badarinarayan. Garud os seen is sitting position and in prayer with his hands folded. The walls and pillars of the mandapa are covered with intricate carvings.

The Garbha Griha portion has its canopy covered with a sheet of gold and houses Lord Badari Narayan, Kuber (God of wealth), Narad rishi, Udhava, Nar and Narayan. The complex has 15 idols. Especially attractive is the one-metre high image of lord Badarinath, finely sculpted in black stone. According to legend Shankara discovered a black stone image of Lord Badarinarayan made of Saligram stone in the Alaknanda River. He originally enshrined it in a cave near the Tapt Kund hot springs. In the sixteenth century, the King of Garhwal moved the murti to the present loction of the temple. It represents Lord Vishnu seated in a meditative pose called Padmasan.

 History and Mythological Significance:

The name of the Badarinath tirtha originates from local word Badari which is a type of a wild berry. It is said that when Lord Vishnu sat in penance in these mountains, His consort Goddess Laxmi took the form of a berry tree and shaded Him from the harsh sun. It is not only the dwelling place of Lord Vishnu Himself but also home to countless pilgrims, saints and sages, who meditate here in search of enlightenment.

"According to Skand Puran, the idol of Lord Badarinath was recovered by Adiguru Shankaracharya from Narad Kund and was re-enshrined in the 8th century A.D. in this temple."

According to Hindu Tradition, Badarinath often called as Badari Vishal, was re-established by Adi Shri Shankaracharaya to revieve the lost prestige of Hinduism and to unite nation in one bond. It was built in the ages when Buddhism was spreading in the Himalayan range and there was worry that Hinduism was losing it's importance and glory. So the Adi Sankaracharya took it upon himself to bring back the glory of Hinduism and built temples in the Himalayas for the Hindu Gods of Shiva and Vishnu. The Badarinath temple is one such shrine and is richly infused with sacred accounts from numerous ancient Hindu scriptures. Be it the puranic story of the Pandav brothers, along with Draupadi, going past on their last pilgrimage by ascending the slopes of a peak near Badarinath called Swargarohini or the 'Ascent to Heaven' or the visit by Lord Krishna and other great sages, these are just some of the many tales which we associate with this holy tirtha.

The famed Skanda Purana describes more about the place as "There are several sacred shrines in heaven, on earth, and in hell; but there is no shrine like Badarinath."

The Divine Rituals:

The temple opens for the devotees only during the winter months (usually in May) and closes in November, as the region is heavily snowed in during the winter. Devotees embark on the pilgrimage to Badrinath mainly between these months.

 

A puja or ritual is performed every day in the temple, and during certain festivals, special events are held. The Shri Badrinath Temple is particularly known for its early morning ritual, where the temple gates open at 4:30 am for the Abhishek (sacred bathing ceremony) of the deity, followed by daily offerings of milk, honey, ghee, and fruits.

Hanoi Train Street - A Narrow Train Bypass

Hanoi Train Street or Railway Street (Vietnamese: Phố Đường Tàu Hà Nội) is a narrow train bypass in Hanoi which several times daily sees a train pass close to buildings on either side of the tracks (the width of the train takes up nearly the entirety of the "train street"). It is situated specifically, along Điện Biên Phủ and Phùng Hưng streets,opposite Dropin Cafe and the main Hanoi Railway Station. The track was built by the French in 1902 and is still an active rail line as of 2026.

The train passes several times daily, on the single track line running north out of Hanoi railway station (thus not the rail line between Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City in the south). Residents living alongside the tracks clear their belongings from the narrow space when trains approach. In recent years, Hanoi Train Street has become increasingly popular with tourists, drawing more attention to its charm. However, due to the growing influx of visitors, local authorities have placed more emphasis on regulating the flow of traffic and ensuring safety along the tracks.

Visiting Hanoi Train Street

The street developed into a tourist destination in Hanoi before local authorities closed it to visitors in October 2019, citing safety concerns. Tourists would often stop and take pictures to post on social media along the narrow alley. The area includes cafes and homes, but local officials have also reported concerns about unauthorized residents and drug use in the vicinity. The overcrowded street caused the need to reroute a local train on October 6, 2019, prompting the closure. Local cafes have sprung up to serve the bustling tourist trade along the street and owners are concerned over the loss of business the closure will bring. The VnExpress newspaper cites a train driver that has had three close calls with tourists on the tracks, once stopping only meters from the woman who was taking pictures of the train.

Safety concerns have increased in recent years as tourism has grown. Train drivers have reported making emergency stops when visitors did not clear the tracks despite warnings. On June 18, 2024, a viral video showed a woman risking her life by jumping onto the track to pose for a picture before she was rescued by a bystander. In another incident, an unidentified South Korean tourist survived being hit by a train.

In October 2019, Vietnamese government directed businesses along the train track to close and implemented barriers and police presence to restrict tourist access to the street. This prompted thousands of complaints on social media and negatively affected local tourist businesses.

The train street reopened in early 2023 for tourists. Visitors frequently gather at locations including the intersection at the North side near P.Trần Phú close to old quarter or South side near Ng.222 Đ.Lê Duẩn. Both sides are crowded with local cafes on sides indicating the train timetable. Tourists could also request train passing by time from cafe in advance. Usually there are around seven trains passing by from 7 am to 11 pm.

Hanoi Train Street has seen a growth in local businesses since it became popular with world tourists. As the number of visitors increased, many residents around the area turned their houses into businesses for selling drinks, food, and handmade souvenirs. Many small cafes populate the street, including Cafe Đường Tàu and Cafe Ga Đông Hương.

The railway line that runs along the north–south railway was built by the French in 1902 during their colonial rule of Vietnam. Hanoi Train Street was originally home to railway workers and their families since 1956. Houses around the area were built as collective housing for the employees. In recent years, the street attracted widespread recognition and eventually became a tourist attraction, with various cafes and small businesses along the street.

Tourists can safely watch the train from the outdoor seating areas of the local cafes; owners will typically move their stools closer to the wall and advise patrons to do so as the train approaches. Many will also post train times on chalk boards in their establishments.

Kumbh Mela: The Largest Spiritual Gathering on Earth

The Maha Kumbh Mela is one of the largest religious gatherings in the world. It is an ancient Hindu festival celebrated at four pilgrimage locations in India: Prayagraj (Allahabad), Haridwar, Ujjain, and Nashik. The Maha Kumbh Mela is believed to take place every 12 years, rotating among these locations. The 2025 Prayag Maha Kumbh Mela, also referred to as the 2025 Prayag Kumbh Mela. It is the world’s largest gathering, celebrating a full revolution of Jupiter. It is scheduled to take place from 13 January to 26 February 2025, at the Triveni Sangam in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, India. This event marks the completion of a 12-Kumbh Mela cycle and is officially termed a Maha Kumbh Mela, spanning 45 days.

Since the Kumbh Mela has been organized for ages and its commencement date is unknown, calculating the exact 144-year cycle is not certain. However, as per astronomical calculations, the 2025 Mahakumbh Mela is unique in itself since its constellation alignment is witnessed once every 144 years. Thus, the most auspicious of all the Maha Kumbh in the past 144 years is in 2025.

Significance:

The Maha Kumbh Mela symbolises the victory of Gods over demons. 

The Maha Kumbh Mela is the world's largest peaceful congregation of people. This gathering contains millions of devotees immersing themselves in the Ganges, Yamuna, and the Saraswati, waters of which are considered holy by the Hindus, symbolising a purification of the soul and a path to attaining Moksha or liberation.

The 2025 Maha Kumbh Mela has made preparations for the attendance of up to 40 crores (400 million) visitors. The most auspicious dates, when millions of people come together to bathe in the holy river, are known as Shahi Snans (Royal Bath).

• January 13, 2025: The festival began on Paush Purnima
• January 14, 2025: Makar Sankranti
• January 29, 2025: Mauni Amavasya
• February 3, 2025: Basant Panchami
• February 12, 2025: Maghi Purnima
• February 26, 2025: The festival ended on Maha Shivratri

These are the main days when devotees believe taking a dip in the sacred waters will cleanse them of sins and purify their souls.

On January 16, 2025, a 21-member international delegation from 10 countries took a holy dip at the Triveni Sangam in Prayagraj, India. The delegation was invited by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) of India

Types Of Kumbh Mela:

There are four types of Kumbh Melas, each differing in frequency and location:

1. Maha Kumbh Mela (Once in 144 Years)

• The rarest and grandest of all, celebrated only at Prayagraj and the next Maha Kumbh will be in 2145.

2. Purna Kumbh Mela (Every 12 Years)

• The main Kumbh Mela, occurring at all four locations in rotation. Last held at Prayagraj in 2013.

3. Ardh Kumbh Mela (Every 6 Years)

• Held in Prayagraj and Haridwar only. Last held in Prayagraj in 2019.

4. Magh Mela (Annual Mini Kumbh)

• Also known as Mini Kumbh, celebrated every year in Prayagraj during January-February.

Main Rituals & Activities:

1. Shahi Snan (Royal Bath) -The most significant ritual, where Naga Sadhus (naked ascetics) and other sects of saints take a ceremonial dip before common devotees.

2. Ganga Aarti & Religious Discourses - Spiritual leaders, saints, and scholars hold sermons, bhajans, and discussions on Hindu philosophy.

3. Naga Sadhus & Akharas - The Naga Sadhus, who live in seclusion, emerge during the Kumbh to bless devotees. Various Akharas (monastic sects) perform religious processions.

4. Cultural & Yoga Programs- The Kumbh hosts cultural fairs, showcasing Indian heritage, yoga camps, and art exhibitions.

Service and Facilities:

The authorities have set up a temporary city covering 4,000 hectares (40 km²) to accommodate the massive number of pilgrims attending the Maha Kumbh Mela 2025. This city includes 150,000 tents, improved sanitation facilities, and better transportation services. To ensure security, 40,000 police officers and AI-powered surveillance systems have been deployed.

To expand the available land, four dredging machines were used to reclaim 26 additional hectares (0.26 km²), significantly increasing the Sangam’s capacity and three times more than in 2019 Prayag Ardh Kumbh Mela. 

The area has been divided into 25 sectors. The total length of the ghats is 12 km (7.5 mi). Parking facilities now cover 1,850 hectares (18.5 km²). The total road length within the Mela area has increased over 450 km (280 mi) to improve accessibility.

1) Railway Infrastructure:

Indian Railways has announced an increase in the number of coaches in key trains, such as the Prayagraj Express and Lucknow Mail, to accommodate the expected influx of pilgrims during the Mahakumbh 2025.

Indian Railways operated their all-time high of 360 trains from Prayagraj Junction Railway Station including 190 special trains, 110 regular trains and 60 MEMU trains to manage the pilgrims who came to take a holy dip on the day of Mauni Amavasya, on 29 January 2025.
